The Craft
Here at Hide & Haunch our handmade leather goods are lovingly crafted using traditional tools and techniques. We are proud to say that each item is cut, stitched, bevelled and burnished by hand ensuring a product that is far superior to anything made by machine.
The First Cut
Every piece of leather is carefully inspected for blemishes and imperfections before the pattern pieces are marked out ready for cutting. Next comes the careful task of cutting out each piece of leather by hand.
The Stitch
All of our products are assembled using the traditional technique of saddle stitching, this time consuming task has its benefits over machine stitching. While it takes longer to sew by hand, the resulting saddle stitch is stronger and more durable than any machine stitch, not to mention how beautiful a saddle stitch looks. We feel the saddle stitch to be the defining factor of a quality leather product.
The Burnish
All edges are burnished by hand to a smooth, glassy texture. Finishing the edges is labor intensive, but it’s an important step for the durability and aesthetics of the product.
We offer two options when it comes to finishing off our leather products, dyed edge and natural edge burnishing. Both are great options and is entirely down to personal preference.
